New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
