Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
